WEAR: mom - bejewel thyself!
Posted by Sal Taylor Kydd on 5/02/2008

Mother’s Day is here again - and being a relatively new Mom - well just 3 years in - I am beside myself with excitement as Liseanne Frank is having a Mothers Day Shopping Event! But here’s my question - do I go and shamelessly buy myself something exquisite and extravagant - or do I send my husband? Both seem terribly gauche, I may just have to suck it up send him an email with a none-too-subtle hint and hope for this best. Anyway ladies - enjoy, indulge - be it for yourself or for your own Mom - and smile as you think of sleepless nights appeased.

INSIDE: etsy gift guide

SAL: Tis the season and all that, so with the holidays approaching, now is a good time to take a look at some of these picks from the wonderful world of Etsy. Hopefully you’ll find some cool gift ideas here for your nearest and dearest. Along the lines of Harry’s theme of gifting art, there are some great finds to be had. Above is a signed limited edition print from Minnesota-based Studio Mela. She has a whole range of whimsical prints I really like. There’s some great photography to be found on Etsy too. I really like Tina Teaspoon’s sepia and black and white photography, her Tableau Deliquesce (below) is stunning. Ashley Robin’s work is also great - retro-looking color prints of nature - very cool (see below again).

Etsy also has some great stuff for kids - a lot of felt and knitted toys, but some very cool pieces too. Check out the finger puppets from Cheryl Smith and I love these dolls (below) from Le Peitit Boutique - with those large heads and tiny bodies they’re a little freaky looking, but they have the best outfits!

For those of you after something more decorative, take a look at Etsy’s pendant selection - a tad cheaper than those available at Anthropologie this season. I really like this yellow porcelain pendant below, and the Evergreen pendant with a green and white paisley design is also lovely. Happy holidays!

INSIDE: trick or treat
Posted by Sal Taylor Kydd on 10/22/2007

SAL: Nine days to Halloween to go and I can scarcely contain myself! OK, I exaggerate. As I’ve mentioned before, this isn’t my favorite holiday - way too many spiders for my liking! However, for those of you wanting to indulge and add a little Halloween Goth to your home decor scene here are a few gems that caught my eye. A good place to start is Etsy’s Halloween showcase, I especially liked the Little Witch print (above) from Bad Bird who has a definitively dark point of view. On Design Public I found these elegant new cushions from Dwell, that have a certain Gothic quality and Coe & Waito have these lovely porcelain vases that are very dramatic - available online at Peek Keep. For outdoors you can try something a little different from your regular Jack-O-Lantern, with a Pumpkin Topiary from Smith & Hawken. And when you’re out trick or treating - go a little crazy with these sexy costumes from Baby Girl boutique - well, we can but dream!

SAL: Ah, the holiday season approaches and with it all the tacky gaudy decorations that can so overwhelm even the strictest aesthete. Halloween is no exception to this - infact I’d say it’s the biggest offender with all the orange and faux cobwebs that can turn your home into a nightmare - no pun intended. So my recommendation? Keep it simple, some lights, a pumpkin and leave it at that. For that reason, I love these ghost string lights from Wrapables, found via HGTV. Fun and simple. Let me know any cool Halloween ideas you have!
