SAL: LA has a vibrant artistic and cultural community, but too often in our hectic, toddler-chasing days we just don’t make enough of an effort to get out there. So this week my husband and I are making that effort to go and check out a new exhibition opening at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. Chris Anthony’s photographs are haunting, sometimes disturbing, but distinctly fascinating.

INSIDE: UK in the US

Sal will be pleased to know I stumbled across the Conran shop. And a lot of their stuff overlaps with Habitat UK. It’s not cheap but, boy is it good. Well worth a trawl. I love this pendant light. Achille Castiglioni designed it in 1964. So chic.

INSIDE: time for a project
Posted by saltaylorkydd on 3/24/2009

Although it’s often easier to just buy new, there’s a lot to be said for finding that old vintage gem and redoing it. You just have to be careful as there are some folks charging a fortune for reupholstering old pieces - always do your homework and get a couple of quotes. The fabulous Laura Baker found this wonderful chair we’re just about to refinish. I love the shape but was initially a bit put off by the cost $350  - which once you add in reupholstering costs (which should never run over $300 - $400 for a piece this size) well it all starts to add up. However, there is a slight crack so we got it for $250. I don’t know why but that made all the psychological difference :). I’ll let you know once it’s redone!

INSIDE: throw it on
Posted by cerentha on 3/24/2009

My husband got back from London last week armed with a Habitat catalog and a gorgeous throw by Mia Cullin (the pic doesn’t do it justice). Cullin has most recently done an amazing curtain in Tyvek (below) for Woodnotes. Sal is so right - we need Habitat here. Surely Conran would like to capture the American market. Rents must be cheap now. Come on!
